Last Day In Paradise

We woke up at a reasonable time and headed straight to the market. There we chatted with the owner again learning about the bread and baked goods she had for that day. She ended up selling us a caprese sandwhich for Brett as well as a focaccia bread pizza. In addition to this we bought a loaf of her bread which we used to make breakfast sandwiches back at the house. All of them were just to die for!! Everything was still warm from the oven. Before we left she sat us down to explain some of the best places to see and eat before we left. Unfortunately, we would not have remotely enough time to do all the things before we left but we have plenty of items to add to our list of things to do for when we return. She even gave us a map of Corfu which he father had helped to develop many years back. She said none of the recent maps compare to the one she is giving us and it is meant to travel to the United States and back again when we return. We also learned that Corfu is home to a flock of flamingos! We did not have time to seek them out however we would love to do that sometime in the future!

We spent our last day in Corfu touring around the northwest portion of the island. The first stop we made was to go see the Canal de’ Amore (the Canal of Love!). It is a neat spot because there is a nice sand beach surrounded by tall rock formations carved by the ocean. It is very narrow but you are able to walk almost all they way out and still be touching. The legend has it that if you are single and you go for a swim in this canal you will soon find your true love! We hit this spot at just the right time. It was pretty quiet with not too many people there to crowd the small beach and swimming area. We waded into the cool water and floated around enjoying the soft sand under our feet. After our swim we climbed up the rocks to soak in the sun and dry off. Not long after that a horde of people showed up! It became very crowded and thus our queue to depart. We made for another beach on the west side of the island about 20 minutes south of where we were.

As we approached the second beach it became clear from the view that this was going to be an enjoyable place to relax. The beach spanned the coastline for as far as we could see until it ran into the lush vegetation of the mountains and cliff sides. The sun was shining and glittering across the turquoise water. It seems busier than we expected for shoulder season however it was not remotely crowded. We found our own spot to sit on the beach and walked along the surf acclimating our feet to the cool water. When we were hotter than Hades we braved the ocean water. The initial 2 feet were very rocky and at first were a bit deterring however once we leapt in we found the ocean floor to once again be a soft sand. The waves were small and we waded out into the water to enjoy swimming and floating in the sun. We spent who knows how long out there in the water but it was wonderful!! We took a break to enjoy our focaccia pizza and sandwich before going back to swim some more. By the time the sun started to go down we decided we had to head back home, although with much reluctance!! We did not want this last day to end. We have had beyond a wonderful time here in Corfu and we are truly sad to be leaving tomorrow.

We spent our last night eating at our favorite restaurant in Doukades. I again got the fried fish which was awesome! Brett order a beef steak which was huge and delicious!! Their greek salad was the best we had and we of course had to have it one more night. As we finished our dinner they brought us a simple and yummy dessert consisting of Greek yogurt, orange slices and apple slices covered in cinnamon and honey. After dinner we said goodnight to our fur friends and sadly packed our bags to prepare for our long day of travel back home. We would stay in Corfu if we could but we will settle for a trip back in the future, for now. We are excited to get home to our own fur bubbas and are looking forward to being in our own home once again. Goodbye and see you again Corfu!!
