After having a break from traveling to Boston for work I am entering again into another round of trips. This time however, we planned for Brett to join me and it has made the whole experience so much more fun and enjoyable. We flew into Logan International Airport on a Wednesday afternoon with plenty of time to get to our hotel and grab dinner before…….going to a Red Sox game!!
We found an A-mazing pizza place called The Salty Pig for dinner. Brett had the best pepperoni pizza he’s ever eaten and I got freshly made pasta full of squid, shrimp, and lobster. We enjoyed our dinner and were so stuffed afterwards we were greatful for the walk to Fenway Park. I’ve never been to a baseball park besides Coors Field. Brett informed me that all baseball fields are different and each team designs how big their field is. I had no idea that was the case! While there was some light sprinkling the weather was really nice and we had an awesome view! We even got to see a homerun where the ball was literally hit out of the park!
Mid-day Friday we headed out for our weekend adventure! We rented a hard top convertable VW Cabrio from a guy who lives in Cambridge. While we thought this was an amazing idea a couple of months ago….turns out the weather was not in our favor. It has been a fun car to drive but would be a million times better if we could put the top down without getting rained on! We set out early because we didn’t want to get caught in the notorious “Cape Traffic” and we were glad we did because we had a mostly enjoyable time (other than the crazy Boston drivers!).
We rented an AirBnB in Falmouth, MA which is right across the sound from Martha’s Vinyard. It is right on the ocean and you can see the Vinyard when its not foggy. We would open the windows in the early morning so we could listen to the ocean crash upon the rocks.
For our first dinner we decided to be adventurous – we bought Swordfish (2.4 lbs!!) from the grocery store. The butcher was very helpful in giving some guidance on how to cook it and boy was he right!! The steaks turned out amazing and Brett loved it so much he ate his entire steak!!
Saturday morning it was still raining but despite this fact we went for a walk on the beach. This trip was Brett’s first time seeing the ocean up close – he even got his feet wet! He really enjoyed the soothing sound and warm wind that rolled off the ocean. We met a lot of new friends on the beach and said fair well to some that had passed on. After our sandy walk we warmed up and took a little drive around the southern part of Falmouth and Woods Hole.
On Saturday night we celebrated our anniversay by going out to a nice dinner at the Quarterdeck on main street of Falmouth. It was a super cute and old restaurant that was built of wood from the local harbors. The people were super nice and we had a lovely time. Brett ate his first ever fish and chips! Needless to say, he cleared his entire plate! I got a dish that had scallops, black bean radish salad, and fiddleheads. Neither of us had ever heard of or tasted fiddleheads before – they are the furled fronds of a young fern which are harvested for a vegetable. We both thought they were absolutely delicious!
Sunday unfortunately rolled around and we had to make our way back to reality and crazy city life in Boston. We had aquired a mini collection of shells, a love of the beach and ocean, and a reluctance to leave the beautiful coast. We ended up getting kicked out of our AirBnB a little sooner than anticipated so the classy folks that we are, we enjoyed our delicious pizza as we took in a view of the beautiful ocean one last time! We’ve had such a wonderful time in Boston and Falmouth and I’m not looking forward to spending the next couple of days without Brett here. Until next time Cape Cod!
Dear You Two,
Kate and I always wanted to make memories. You two are doing a wonderful caring on of that tradition. Brett, You must have tasted alot of new food and the way Kate wrote the Blog on it it seems you have enjoyed alot of new things in life like the ocean. It was touching how Kate said it would be difficult without being with you Brett for the rest of her stay. I get the impression Brett that you mean alot to Kate and she must love you alot and that is really saying a great deal of the depth of your love for each other.
