Halló!

Reykjavik, Iceland

I had an awesome time in Iceland.  It did however feel a little bit like being on a conveyor belt.  After a long plane ride I landed at 6 am local time.  I hit the ground running, picking up my bags and looking for my shuttle.  I passed so many huge shuttle buses and ended up in a dilapidated van with 6 other strangers.

The ride was spectacular – the geography there is truly unique.  The soil is so dark everything looks like you are on a volcano.  As we got closer to the Blue Lagoon there were geothermal pools that were steaming to the side of the road.  It definitely did smell when we got out of the van but it was hardly noticeable once I got inside.  The water was amazing and it was raining in the morning so it was super steamy.  Then it got really sunny in the afternoon which was super relaxing.  I ended up in the same van with the same people except this time pretty much everyone slept on the ride to Reykjavik.

I was dropped off at Kex Hostel which turned out to be a pretty awesome place.  Everyone there was really nice and they had amazing food.  I walked around the city for a while in the evening.  I wasn’t in any kind of hurry since it stays light out until about 11 pm at this time of year.  While the city was interesting, I would say if you ever visit here its more worth it to stay a couple days, rent a car, and get into the countryside.

My flight ended up getting delayed due to a strike.  It was madness at the airport.  None of the baggage desks were checking people in until 9 and there was a quickly growing line.  I got my bags up to the counter and found out that my backpack was an “odd-sized” bag and had to wait in an equally long line that was being interrupted by a second long line of airline crew waiting to board their planes.  It was chaotic to say the least.

Off to Amsterdam!
