New Hobby

I have been interested in the whole wine bottle cutting process for a while but never really did my due diligence to look into.  Finally I ordered the Generation Green g2 Bottle Cutter from Amazon.  After talking to a couple of friends who have tried other models I think this is one of the best ones.  It allows you to cut multiple bottle in sequence without having to measure and provides a way to score the bottles along the same line consistently.

While trial and error is one of the best ways to perfect a process, I also watched a lot of YouTube videos and read many tutorials.  One of the best ones I found was this video where the guy talks through many different processes and what he found to work best.  In his video he simply pours boiling hot water that he heated in an electric kettle over the score line then runs it under cold water.  This does appear to work but I don’t think this is the most efficient way to do this.

What I found, through breaking a number of bottles along the way, is that creating an extreme temperature difference is the key to ensuring a clean break every time.  My method for this was to put a stock pot of water on the stove an keep it at a rolling boil.  I then used a second pot in my sink that I first filled with ice then with water.  I would periodically add more ice to my cold water to make sure it stayed as cold as possible.

After scoring my bottle I then submerge the line in the boiling water for 10 seconds, remove it, and submerge it in the ice cold water for another 10 seconds.  This sometimes resulted in a break but more often than not I had to submerge it once more in the boiling water, at which point it would instantly break.

That’s it!  While it might seem daunting at first it really is quite an easy process.  Good luck experimenting!
