I am SO excited for spring! Colorado has been messing with our minds (as usual) and oscillating between 8in snow storms and bright springy days. I couldn’t resist the urge to get a head start on planting this fine spring weekend. While it is still a bit too early for flowers I went ahead and purchased some herbs. I do not have a green thumb – I try every year to grow something (tomatoes, peppers, etc) but I never really have much success. This year I am sticking to herbs – hopefully I can get these to grow!
I was thinking this morning how it would be nice to have labels for all of my new herbs so I would at minimum remember what they are! I tossed around various ideas – all involving a trip to the local thrift and craft stores. I ended up figuring out a ZERO cost solution that I think is super cute! What do you need?
- Wine corks (the less writing/decor on them the better)
- Chopsticks (Chinese delivery anyone?!)
- Pocket knife and/or cork screw
- Woodburner
I imagine the one thing most people don’t have is a woodburner, however I think you could substitute some paint and a paintbrush to get the job done. If you are like any normal human being you use a corkscrew to get the cork out of your wine bottle therefore you already have a hole down the center. I also have a tendency to collect my corks when I finish a bottle of wine so I had those on hand.
To start I heated up my woodburner and began by burnishing the herb names into my corks. I tried to choose the plainest corks I could find so I had more surface area to write the names. When I finished that I used this knifty little tool on my pocket knife to widen the hole a bit so I could stick the chopstick in. Then I was done! No glue needed!
